Events Ahead in 2010
Thursday, June 24, 5:30 p.m.: The Martha's Vineyard Museum will host a centennial observance of the grounding of the schooner Mertie B. Crowley, with a talk and reception in the Pease House. One hundred years ago, on January 23, 1910, a six-masted schooner ran aground and was destroyed off Wasque. All aboard were rescued by a small fishing boat out of Edgartown. Vineyard Gazette reporter Mark Alan Lovewell will give a talk and moderate a discussion. Descendants of those who risked their lives in the rescue will be there to share their stories, their memorabilia and fellowship. Thursday, July 22, Edgartown Whaling Church, Celebration of the Sea. A program of Stories, Sea Songs and Poetry given by Mark Alan Lovewell. This is an annual fundraiser for Martha's Vineyard Museum and Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust. Free Celebration of the Sea reception starts at 5:30 p.m. Exhibitors at the reception will include a number of nonprofit organizations committed to preserving the Vineyard maritime’s heritage through science, raising environmental awareness and education. Concert at 7 p.m. Admission $15. Children and seniors $10. Call 508-627-4441 for more details.
