Mark Alan Lovewell - Photographer
From the Island of
Martha's Vineyard is an especially beautiful island. This is where photographer and writer Mark Alan Lovewell lives and works. His photography and stories appear regularly in the weekly newspaper Vineyard Gazette.
"For more than 34 years, I've been a witness to the Island's changing seasonal moods. I've seen the Vineyard amid the winds of a hurricane and at dawn of a quiet still morning."
While he enjoys shooting scenic photographs on and around the Island, in a boat and on the shore, people photography is a big part of the work he does.
Mr. Lovewell is a journalist first, capturing events and not becoming an event. Mark likes to work with people up close. A portrait with a smile can be an accident; but with a professional photographer it is no accident.
Great wedding photography might be done by anyone with a great camera; but with more than 30 years of professional work, the results are no accident.
Mark photographs using the best professional digital camera, lenses and software available.
His tools include a Fuji X-T1 for shooting digital color; a Hasselblad medium format film camera, a (4 x 5) large format camera and a HD Sony video camera.
As a young photographer he was influenced by the large format photography of Ansel Adams, Paul Strand and Edward Weston.
Years ago The New England Outdoor Writers Association gave a number of first place awards to this photographer. In their 1997 spring newsletter the following was written: "Vineyard Gazette reporter, photographer and fishing columnist, Mark Lovewell showed us just how beautiful black and white can be. Mark Won First Place in Scenic, Action and Fauna categories, a second in Scenic and third in Fauna in the Black and White Division!"
In the spring of 2002, Mr. Lovewell was featured in the magazine Vineyard Style. Editor John Budris wrote an extensive piece on Mr. Lovewell, his work and photography. In February 2007, Mr. Lovewell received a second place general news award from the New England Newspaper Association. As recently as this past year (2010), his photographs have appeared in the Boston Globe, Good Morning America, and the New York Times. Up close he has photographed and met two Presidents and three Massachusetts Governors. It is work, but ask him: “It is also a lot of fun.”
